I
think one of the characters who has shown a significant change in character is Neville
Longbottom. Neville was introduced as round-faced, with a short, chubby build
and blond hair and bucked teeth. Initially, Neville is portrayed as a nervous,
low self-esteemed, nobody. We did see his true character shine through a few
times, though. For example when he stood up to Ron, Harry, and Hermione when
they were trying to sneak out of the common room he showed individual strength.
Neville was just trying to do what was right, and was therefore rewarded house
points. Neville showed insane courage because like Dumbledore said, it is even
harder to stand up against your friends.
Although
Neville does not discover the room of requirement in The Order of the Phoenix, he is one of the first students to join
Dumbledore’s Army. Neville is very dedicated to improving his magic skills. He
is determined to serve a purpose in being a member of Dumbledore’s Army. So
determined, in fact, that he works so hard during their first session that he
successfully completes a disarming charm. Upon hearing that the Death Eaters
that tortured his parents into insanity are on the loose, it motivates him to
work even harder in DA.
Where
Neville’s character really shines though, is at the Ministry of Magic. Neville,
along with others from DA, accompany Harry because they think Sirius needs
saving. Once they figure out it is a trap, Harry is determined to face the
Death Eaters. Neville is right behind Harry and immediately he starts casting
stunning spells only to be quickly subdued then tortured by Bellatrix Lestrange
the same way his parents were. A Death Eater, McNair grabs hold of Harry by the
throat and demands the prophecy they all came for. Neville saves the day and
stabs McNair in the eye, who then releases Harry. Neville has shown both
courage and loyalty from the beginning, but it shines through more and more
every book.
